I just got my first subscriber. Thing is, I don’t even have a newsletter yet. I guess it’s about time I pulled one together.
There’s a workshop I went to a couple of weeks ago called “You’ve written a book. Now what?” One of the things the presenter said was that to get an agent or a publisher to take you seriously, you have to have a social media presence with…
“I’m sorry, did you say two hundred and fifty followers?”
“No, two hundred and fifty thousand.”
Her advice was to pick one social media outlet, whether it be Facebook or Twitter or Substack or whatever, and start cranking out blog posts. Blog about anything was her advice. She knew a writer who blogged about puppies. That had nothing to do with what he was writing, but because he had the numbers, he was demonstrating that he had the skill and the commitment to publicize his book once it was published.
By the end of her talk, it did seem like so much of your life would be consumed with marketing and social media that you’d have to hire a ghost writer for your actual writing.
So that was kind of discouraging.
But.
Even if 250,000 is an absurd number, I can be doing a little more than I have been. And starting a newsletter can be part of that.
So here’s my invitation to you: Scroll to the bottom where it says "Join my mailing list," enter your email where it says to, and then mash that Subscribe Now button.
You know you want to.
